Diovan is the registered trademark name of a medicine that treats difficulties related to cardiovascular system. A few of them are: high blood pressure, post-heart attack problems and congestive heart failure etc. The generic name for this drug is Valsartan. This medicine dilates the blood vessels thus making the work of the heart easier so that the blood easily flows out from the heart to different parts of the body thereby lowering the blood pressure. Although this medicine does an important job like lowering the blood pressure, it sometimes adversely acts with the patient and results in side effects which make other bodily functions go haywire. Weight Gain
If you see yourself gaining weight after taking Diovan medications, consult your doctor. Sometimes drinking alcohol while taking these medications leads to weight gain so try and avoid adult beverages completely. Congestive heart failure medicines usually make the patient gain weight. The only way out would be to eat a balanced diet and work out and exercise to avoid the extra weight from adding on. 

Erectile Dysfunction
Although erectile dysfunction has been reported in very few cases among patients who have been administered Diovan, but you should be prompt and act immediately if you experience any sexual discomfort while you are on this medications. It is hard to predict how the medicine will act upon every individual. In clinical trial, the side effects of the drug are reported and listed but each individual reacts differently depending upon a variety of factors. So, if Diovan is affecting your sexual health, it will be wise to consult your doctor and get alternative medicines that suit you better. 

Skin Rash
Skin rashes and allergic reactions occur on some patients for whom Diovan is not suitable. Allergic reactions show that our body is not adjusting with the foreign substance and sometimes the condition worsens and skin rashes give way to swelling of the mouth and face. Q: I have been of meds since February this year. Was on Rampiril but it did not agree
with me so they put me on Diovan 80mg which caused side effects. They lowered the dose to 40mg. Most side effects stopped except for tightness in chest, tongue and mouth tender and when walking up a hill, I am totally out of breath! Are these side effects typical of this medication? My bp was mostly normal with spikes every so often.

A: Yes, you are experiencing side effects that have been reported with Diovan. Sometimes a doctor has to try multiple medications before one drug or a combination of drugs is found that both controls blood pressure and is tolerable. Discuss your side effects with your doctor.
