Although I have posted something already on this subject (SMC-80102 The Abomination of Desolation), decided to do it all over again. The reasons are that perhaps one explanation is easier to digest than the other and I might touch upon something I failed to previously. Between the two maybe it will make a more complete sense.

This gets a little tricky to explain, so we do it in two parts:
First; go back to the Book of Daniel where we are introduced to the Abomination of Desolation - in particular; Dam. 12.11 (using the NIV text):
“From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.”
In our English usage, we would automatically conclude from this reading the there will be 1,290 days between when the daily sacrifice is abolished and when the Abomination of Desolation is set up or established.
Let’s look at the word “abolished”. That is a term indicating an edict, an officially mandated cessation.
Now let’s look at the term “daily sacrifice”. What exactly is meant by that? Are we talking here of the old Temple services performed daily in the Temple? Many people think “Yes” and for this reason conclude that there MUST be a re-built Temple in the final days of this Age. They also point to a somewhat obscure Prophecy that the Messiah will ride through the Eastern Gate and seat himself on His Throne in the Temple.
I say, “No”. Jesus already rode on a “white horse” through the Eastern Gate and did in fact go straight to the Temple on what is popularly called “Palm Sunday” and in most Bibles is called His “Triumphal Entry”.
An “ass” is a member of the horse family - some substitute “donkey” but that’s not technically correct. It was a foal of an ass thus had not yet acquired its darker coloration. In like manner Jesus spoke of the fields being “white” for the harvest. This reveals a tendency within the culture to speak of anything that has been lightened in coloration to be “white” or “whitened” or as we would say; “pale” in color.
I see this because I am very familiar with the appearance with wheat when it is ready to harvest. It is no longer the bright yellow/gold previously but takes on a dull light greyish hue. This is what Jesus referred to as “white” and I contend that by Jesus riding a foal (probably a yearling), the “white horse” is satisfied by a pale colored ass.
God said, “Heaven is My Throne and the earth is My footstool” so God’s Throne has NEVER been on earth and is not now on earth. God’ Throne is in the Highest Heaven, also euphemistically called “Zion”.
So, there is NO need for any End-Time Temple for Jesus to ride into because He has already dome that. He only needed to ride thusly through the Eastern Gate, not all the way up to the Temple in order to fulfill that Prophecy.
Now let’s re-consider the “daily sacrifice”. What exactly do you think is meant here? Is there sacrifice being made currently? And I suggest to you that yes there is. On the Temple Mount itself, the Moslems daily attend the Mosques there. On the Western wall, called the Wailing Wall, devout Jews and visitors daily make sacrifices of prayers and worship.
If then a third party were to come in and prohibit Jews, etc. from coming near the Wailing Wall and disallow Moslems access to the top of the Temple Mount, that 3rd party would have effectively abolished the “daily sacrifice”.
Now for the Second part:
“From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up…”
Forget English thinking. Look at the conjunction “and” in that statement. What it is saying is NOT “between” these two things but when “both” occur at the same time.
Now, read Dan. 12.8 thru 10 which sets up the text at Verse 11:
The question Daniel asked in Verse 8 (NIV):
“My Lord, what will the outcome of all this be?”
“Outcome” here is to be understood as being “conclusion” - in other words: “What will be the conclusion of all this?” After describing a few conditions that would be extant at the time of the End, then Verse 11 is given.
Therefore; Verse 11 is saying that the End will come 1,290 after the daily sacrifice is abolished AND the Abomination of Desolation is set up.
Now let’s go to Revelation Chapter 11.
Starting with Verse 1, we see John given the strange task of measuring the Temple, altar, etc. Why would God want this measured? After all, God Who already knows everything; knows precisely how big it all is. The purpose of this oddness is to emphasize to us who read Revelation the importance of this place and draw our attention to something we would otherwise miss.
Rev. 11.2 says (NIV):
“But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months.”
What makes this especially odd is the fact that only these 2 Verse speak to this (Rev. 11.1 & 2). We never get any measurements or any other commentary on this incident. So, its purpose is simply to make us ask “Why?”
However; there are some clues in it. Remember than in Daniel it tells that the Abomination of Desolation will be “standing in the holy place”? Many rush to the conclusion that the Holy of Holies is meant but in reality the place where the Temple once stood is still there on the Temple Mount - therefore; the “holy place” still exists. Again, no new Temple needed for the Holy Place to be there.
Take note of the exact wording of “42 months”. Only one other place in all of Revelation uses that same phrase “42 months” and that is in Rev. 13.5 telling us how long the Beast will be in power.
Now look at the word “Gentiles” in Rev. 11.2. Is the Beast Gentile? Look at where the Beast comes from in Rev. 13.1.
Partial from Rev. 13.1 (NIV):
“And I saw a beast coming out of the sea,”
Traditionally, the word “sea” has been in Jewish usage been associated with Gentiles because the Gentiles have always been like an “ocean of people” compared to the Jews. Sp yes this line is telling us that the Beast emerges from out of the Gentiles.
And therefore; the Gentiles indicated in Rev. 11.2 represent the Beast.
Now let’s look at the period give by Daniel: 1,290 days. When we examine Revelation, everything points to the Judgment Period being 1,260 days beginning with the 1st Trumpet and ending with the Battle of Armageddon.
Since both time periods end with the same conclusion, then the extra 30 days are at the beginning. Thus we see that the Abomination of Desolation standing in the Holy Place is an event which will occur 30 days before the 1st Trumpet is sounded.
And therefore we may conclude that the Beast is the Abomination of Desolation.
It is an “Abomination” because it is evil at its core . It will cause “Desolation” as Satan and the evil spirits inspire those who constitute the Beast to commit horrific acts - not the least of which is the Destruction of Babylon the Great. We see this as being the intent of the Dragon in Rev. 13.1 as it sets its sights on the emerging Beast.
What happens in those 30 days between the appearance of the Abomination of Desolation and the sounding of the 1st Trumpet? The 6th Seal Event: the Destruction of Babylon the Great.
The Destruction of Babylon the Great is described om Rev. 6.12 where there w know it only as the 6th Seal Event but the outline of the End-Times as given in Rev. Chapter 14 by the 2nd Flying Angel at Verse 8 - and the text of Rev. 16.18 thru 21 recounting the 6th Seal Event telling us within this text that it is the Destruction of Babylon the Great - in which Verse 18 says “God remembered” telling us that this is a “flashback” as are Chapters 17 & 18 which follow.
In Rev. 16.21, we are tolf again about the giant hail-stones described in the 1st Trumpet - leaving no doubt that the events described in the 1st thru 4th Trumpets are the aftermath of the Destruction of Babylon the Great.
The effects of this Destruction is far -reaching and world-wide resulting in the collapse of buildings around the world. “The earth will reel to and fro like a drunkard”, the days will begin shortening in length as the spin of the earth increases, civilization will eventually collapse as well as even the earth’s eco-system goes into collapse.
Desolation will be world-wide and complete although it will decline over the next 1,260 days of the Judgment Period.
That it is the Beast that is the cause of all this desolation is seen in Rev. Chapter 17.15 & 16 where we are told that certain powerful elements (member nations) of the Beast hate Babylon the Great and act together to destroy her.
So, again; it is the Beast that will cause all this Desolation and for that reason is the Abomination of Desolation.

The term “Abomination of Desolation” or by another rendering; “Abomination that makes Desolate” where-in “Abomination” can be understood to mean “Detestable Thing” originates in the Book of Daniel, written over 500 years before the birth of Jesus.
God - Who knows the End from the Beginning; gave it this name over 2500 years in advance of it even earning the title. It is so named not for what it has done but because of what it will do.
I think that fact is very interesting. Because it has not yet earned that title, when it fulfills that Prophecy of it standing in the Holy Place, the people of the world will NOT immediately recognize that it is in fact the Abomination of Desolation.
The Gentiles of the Beast will be simply a few soldiers seen milling about and/or standing guard on the Temple Mount - with perhaps TV coverage of some other soldiers on the streets of Jerusalem.
As I have said in “SMC-71015 The Prelude” I expect these to be U.N. peace-keepers who will have at that time succeeded in creating a buffer-zone between warring factions of the Palestinian Arabs and the Israelis. It will seem at that time that a major conflict in the Middle-East has been averted and thus the threat of World War III also diffused.
But between 3 and 4 weeks later, the Destruction of Babylon the Great will occur and the Judgment Period will begin.
